- Hi, fellow nature lover, thanks for asking. I felt Wiktionary's Latin entries (such as the one included in that edit) to be reliably straightforward; but to be safe, I've now added two book-based refs: one time-honored and the other recent. —Menchi (talk) 02:24, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Chinese names in the German Wikipedia
[edit]Hello Menchi! Thank you for editing the article Zee Yuh-tsung, it was really a great support. Could you also look at Wu Yi Fang, Li Yong, Ren Zhengfei, Zhang Xin and Liu Fang, which I also started? Only if you have time ... Fritzober (talk) 18:17, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hallo Freund, thanks for fixing my "German" in my edits. Sorry I can't write edit summaries in German. At my level, I can't write full sentences; too many noun and verb endings for me....
- You have written interesting mini-biographies for a wide variety of folks. I was impressed by “Zee Yuh-tsung”, which doesn't have versions in English or Chinese...or any other languages!
- I updated “Wu Yi-fang”, because the Bindestrich appears in the mehrsilbigen Eigennamen from the early days of the Republic. The - is still used in Taiwan's official and scholarly texts.
- The other 4 names are perfect, because names from antiquity (dynasties) and the Volksrepublik are now written in Pinyin, which doesn't use a Bindestrich or Leerzeichen inside Vornamen and place-names.
- Nice work, fellow Wikipedian. Good wishes. --Menchi (talk) 04:28, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Menchi! Thank you for your last edits and thank you for the brief insight into the Chinese-Latin transcription systems. As so often in Wikipedia, new worlds are opening up! I find it fascinating to overcome language barriers (and I like to be helped by translation programs, which - of course - can sometimes lead to strange results).

- Hello Menchi! I had a lot of fun in our conversation last night, maybe you look at Niu Hui-sheng again! Greetings from Fritzober (talk) 12:31, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
Outstanding that you've filled in another missing piece. Now DE.Wikipedia has yet one more article that EN.Wikipedia doesn't, and it's not even on Germanistik!
Thanks to this collaboration, I came across these photos of dresses once worn by ladies related to Way-sung New: his cousins (the Soong sisters), aunt (Ni Kwei-tseng), mother (Ni Kwei-kyung), and sister-in-law (Catherine Lau). It doesn't mention New or Zee, but it's a glimpse into the colorful and charming world of the people whose lives you summarized. --Menchi (talk) 12:58, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the corrections at Niu and the interesting link! I will share it with my daughter, who is sure to be enthusiastic about the aesthetics and the stylish life of the protagonists. Greetings from Fritzober (talk) 19:39, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Duplex font
[edit]Hi, thanks for your addition to the matrix article. It's really great to have these extra sources.
However, I'm not sure it's ideal to have duplex font redirect here. Duplexing is a common feature of professional digital fonts, so now abstracted from its original technical implementation. Although the font article doesn't specifically cover it yet, it does mention types of duplexing including tabular figures and font grades, which are duplexed but didn't exist in the metal type period. I feel it would make more sense to cover duplexing in a section of the font article, and refer back to how it was once implemented–thoughts? Blythwood (talk) 12:42, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Blythwood! Thanks for the technically informative rewrite. The distinction you mentioned is valid. I did think about having the redirects go to "font", but I saw how long article already is. I've noticed that sometimes anchor/section links to long articles don't work properly due to loading delays on some browsers/devices. But, having the info there is perhaps more suitable. I appreciate the courtesy of consulting me before the changes, but you're decidedly more informed on typographical topics, so go ahead and do what you deem accurate.
- By the way, do you have any idea what "to cross-rail duplex" could possibly mean? Is that even a typographical term or just an idiom? I Google-Book'd "cross-rail" (and even "rail duplex") in relation to fonts, with no results. Most the Google hits are about the danger of crossing rail tracks and some railway line called Crossrail! A minor mystery. --Menchi (talk) 14:01, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply! Will think about this and update you. No idea about cross-rail duplexing: I guess it might refer to the fact that the matrices could be slid over from the position to cast the regular font to the position to cast italic (or whatever?). It's an interesting topic. One of the strange things about Linotype duplexing is that they offered some very weird combinations: not just roman and bold but serif and bold italic sans-serif, or two totally unrelated fonts like bold sans-serif and blackletter. I imagine that some of this was for specific customers and types of book, like directories (say with a key word in sans-serif), but I don't know. Could also be a factor was the German market, where Linotype had a big market share, where italic wasn't popular because it wasn't used in blackletter typography. Blythwood (talk) 16:54, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the additions you have made to the article, and the sources in particular, some of which link nicely to other things I have been working on recently, such as Mariana (Millais).
In particular, I'm so glad to have found https://drrichardstemp.com/ which seems to be a rare fountain of the most fascinating insights.
(And then I find you are a Wikipedia Ancient of Days, with edits back to 2002! Oh my word...) Theramin (talk) 23:54, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the encouraging words! I'm glad you've found some of the refs interesting. I like your cheerfulness. You even managed to infuse some amiable quirkiness in the normally dry edit summaries. I had some much-needed Wiki-chuckles!
- (You're pretty ancient too, having been here since 2007! The many details you've added to Mariana are professional and a joy to read. Keep coming back!) --Menchi (talk) 08:55, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I think you might have the wrong idea about my "cheerfulness" :) Drowning, not waving. But your kind words go a very long way. Theramin (talk) 01:31, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Records of the Grand Historian
[edit]Hi, Menchi! Long time ago you made revision of Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors article. You mentioned there that: ″It is said that the Three August Ones... The Records of the Grand Historian said that they were: The Heavenly King (天皇) ruled for 18,000 years; The Earthly King (地皇) ruled or 11,000 years; The Human King (泰皇 or 人皇) ruled or 45,600 years″. Do you remember where Records of the Grand Historian mentioned these sovereigns? I could not find it. Or was it some secondary source? I understand that many years have passed, but you might have some ideas. The current reference in the article ([1]) was added much later, and there was no such information there. Igor Filippov (talk) 11:05, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Igor! You dug deep. Those unsourced ages were rightfully deleted long ago. According to zh.Wikipedia, those Methuselah-like numbers came from the a supplement to the Records (second-to-last paragraph; translation). It is an expansion by Sima Zhen, and not Sima Qian’s original Records. (They shared the same family name, but lived dynasties apart.)
- Sima Qian only listed the names of the Three Sovereigns (no details) in a brief quotation in the his bio on another [unrelated, but real] ruler: Qin Shihuang. He did not dedicate a section to the Three Sovereigns.
- So I replaced the vague ref you mentioned: Special:Diff/1000752472.
- --Menchi (talk) 15:10, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Many thanks! That helps a lot. Igor Filippov (talk) 09:50, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

[edit]A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Persian Medicine
[edit]Hi dear friend
I am Meysam
Graduated in Persian Medicine (Traditional Medicine)
I'm going to edit or create a number of pages in my field Although "Persian Medicine" and "Ancient Iranian medicine" have similarities, they are conceptually quite different And recently, in universities and books, the word Persian Medicine has a definite definition
Please permit me to create a separate page for the Persian Medicine Keyword and explain it in full there.
Thanks
If you want to contact me via email
meyssam2008@gmail.com
- Hello Meysam,
- I did not revert (delete) your edits. You can see in the edit history of that article. It was other editors.
- I have not touched that article since 2018. But I understand your point about the definition of the phrase, so just now, I have just converted that page to include other links, including "Iranian traditional medicine".
- Please contact other newer editors — for example, the user DanCherek, who has also welcomed you on your talk page. Please read his explanations, and the links he gave you. According to the edit history, it appears there were also issues with using “predatory journals” (“pay-to-publish” articles)? Wikipedia does not use those type of articles as references, so that might be another problem.
- But, I am not clear on the situation, because I was not involved. If you contact DanCherek, I'm sure he can explain more clearly.
- Hope you will get the clarification you need. Peace. --Menchi (talk) 14:16, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

My drafts
[edit]I was thinking that a few of them could be made into DYKs one day? Cheers, Huldra (talk) 22:31, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Huldra, your draftspace gems are definitely worthy. I'm not up-to-date with the procedures on that side of Wikipedia, but they'd make respectable "Did you know"s, because those topics are what the homepage tends to overlook. Menchi (talk) 02:36, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Well, then in the future, may I suggest you develope the draft-pages, and then "move" them into main-space? As it is, If I hadden happened to come across your Al-Uthmaniyya Madrasa (Jerusalem) and Al-Khatuniyya Madrasa (Jerusalem); I might have continued to work on my User:Huldra/Al-'Uthmaniyya and User:Huldra/Al-Khatuniyya; thinking I would make them a DYK. That chanse is now gone. Please, In the future; just tell me which one(s) you want to work on, cheers, Huldra (talk) 21:48, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Huldra, sorry for the inconveniences to your plans. It was after having already written and published “al-Uthmaniyya” and “al-Khatuniyya” that I remembered your drafts that you told me about in Talk:Tankiziyya over a month ago. I didn't mean to impinge on your workflow; I'll try to take a break from those topics for a while.
- Take care. Cordially, Menchi (talk) 14:49, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah, I recall my edit to Talk:Tankiziyya; and please don't stop editing in the area, if you are interested in it. Just for the matter of transparency (ie, where the works come from) -and potential DYKs; I think it would be best if we follow the "work-flow" which I indicated above. Cheers, Huldra (talk) 20:52, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
- Ok, I’ll keep your indications in mind. :-)
- Re: transparency. For attribution, I did thank you and link to your drafts in the Edit Summaries in both of those articles. But, yes, you're right, your method is clearer. Thanks again for having shared your drafts/knowledge. Appreciatively, Menchi (talk) 01:00, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Unknown template
[edit]Hi Menchi. I haven't had the pleasure yet, although we're sharing interest on many topics. At Tancred's Tower you have added templates for non-English terms which I haven't encountered before, and I wondered what benefits they bring. I mean for instance this:
- {{lang|la|Turris Tancredi}}
Would you be so kind and explain it to me? Thank you, Arminden (talk) 20:20, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- Greetings Arminden. Sure. {{lang}} and {{transliteration}} help text-to-speech systems. Assistive tech can then avoid odd & misleading voice synthesis by not misreading tagged foreign words as English.
- Also, stylesheet add-ons can enlarge the words inside certain languages' templates. Legibility of diacritic-rich & intricate scripts is another relief to visually impaired users & others.
- Template:Lang#Rationale lists more details, eg, applying non-default fonts so uncommon characters aren’t garbled or mojibaked.
- Nice meeting you. Menchi (talk) 15:10, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

[edit]That's what the talk page is for, not the edit summary history log. It's not appropriate to make null edits just so you can debate the merits of someone's es.
Strictly speaking, your edit did indeed "remove" the "regional usage parenthesis" from the lede, although I see now that you added something similar later ("mostly only encountered"), which was edited to remove "mostly" and then subsequently removed in Nov. 2022 (1123242563). Sigh… jhawkinson (talk) 00:00, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi John, sorry, I didn't mean to make my fellow Wikipedians sigh. I always try my best to work respectfully & cordially with others.
- If I misunderstood Help:Summary only edit, I apologize. I felt that summary-only edit was appropriate because a previous edit summary was already on that same history page, and because the info was removed by other editors (in 1118335485 & 1123242563). I realize that you see things differently, so thank you for hearing my perspective.
- Many, if not all, of my edits could indeed be improved. I'm sorry. Wikipedia is just a quiet hobby for me. I never imagined I'd talk this much about the waste containers known as skips. It's time for me to climb out of the skips. :-) I wish you well. Cheers! Goodbye! --Menchi (talk) 06:51, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay. To be clear, you didn't make me sigh, my sigh was directed at the serial editing subsequent to your edit that served to diminish the emphasis and ultimately remove it. Viewed independently, those edits are easy to justify, it's only when looked at longitudinally that the trouble is apparent.
- I was not familiar with H:SUMMARYONLY, but as I read it, semantic debates about edit summararies aren't sufficiently minor to fall under the first bullet ("Sending messages regarding editing issues"), especially because they potentially lack agreement, not because this issue was particularly important.
- I probably spilled too much ink on this one, sorry. Fortunately here in the US we don't have skips (or do we?! We do have some skip-like objects which are not themselves skips…or are they?) :) jhawkinson (talk) 20:30, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
